Dorian Gray Film Review

Okay. Let me catch my breathe. Oh, nevermind. I don't know what category should I put this film in. Either awful or brilliant. I know this film is quite old, but, oh God.

Dorian Gray. Beautiful, young, and rich. Also innocent and naive. Met Lord Henry, a grown up man that taught him everything that soon he do. Dorian's other friend, Basil, already warned Dorian about Lord Henry's words, but for a young man like Dorian, who spent most of his life far from London and all of its scandals, what Henry said is quite... magical. Henry brought Dorian to the world he never know was exist. Or, he knew, but he just never really step into.

When the picture of Dorian that Basil painted is finally finished, Dorian grew jealous of the picture. The picture will stay... as what it is. The picture will never grow old, but Dorian, he will. Wrinkles, dark spots... someday he will lose all his beauty meanwhile the picture will always has it. Accidentally, Dorian made a deal with the devil. He will stay young forever, he will never age, instead the picture. Dorian will never change... physically, but the picture will. Everything that Dorian did will affect the picture of himself. The picture, which supposed to be just a decoration, will reflect Dorian's soul.

Scary?

Well then Dorian met this young and genius actress named Sibyl Vane, and they're about getting married. But, again, Lord Henry shove all his thought about love and marriage to Dorian, and the next thing we know, well, he broke his engagement with Sibyl, and the other day, Sibyl is dead.

Oh, believe me, Dorian didn't kill her. Although... maybe it's because of him Sibyl killed herself.

Dorian's picture looked quite cruel, now.

Day by day, years has passed, but it's true that Dorian trade his soul for youth. He really never age. But the picture grow rotten and ugly. And... the picture started to haunted Dorian. And not just the picture. Every time someone sees the picture, Dorian had to kill them. He already killed Basil. Technically, he killed two people by now. And Sibyl's brother, Jim, already swore that he will kill Dorian if he harmed his sister too. So Dorian, even though looked perfect, is actually living under his fear of the picture, his guilt of Basil and Sibyl, and Jim. Poor boy.

When finally Lord Henry has a kid, and she grew into a very beautiful young woman, Dorian fell in love with her. But Dorian had to protect her from himself. He changed, indeed. But I guess it's just too late. Lord Henry finally find out Dorian's secret of never getting old. He finally knows what Dorian truly is. Dorian is a monster he made, something that has a life he always talk about, a thing that living a life the way he wanted but too afraid to live his life that way.

In the end, Dorian is dead. He tried to destroy the picture, but they exchange. The picture became young and beautiful again. And that disgusting old man who was on the picture took Dorian's place. Dorian's filthy soul is finally one again with the body. And the picture... well... the picture is just a picture again. Just a reflection of Dorian's past.

He was... a charming gentleman. But he's a fool, a pity soul. Deserves your sympathy. But he's an example of greed. You only young once, and you will grow old someday. Nothing could change that. Not even after you sold your soul. Because after all, everything you did will come back to you. Either against you or support you... how do we know?

Three and a half stars out of five.
